Treating Yourself Things Without Guilt- Journaling Prompts

Ever buy yourself something, then feel like you don’t deserve it? That’s not frugality; that’s guilt from years of being told joy has to be earned.

TL;DR:
These prompts help unpack guilt around spending money on yourself or decorating your space. They remind you that joy isn’t something you have to earn.

Prompts:

  1. Who taught me that buying nice things for myself was “wasteful”?

  2. What’s one small thing I bought that actually made me feel safe or happy?

  3. If I gave this gift to a friend, would I still call it “indulgent”?

  4. What’s the difference between surviving and living — and which side am I on today?

  5. What’s one thing I’d buy guilt-free if I believed I deserved it?

I grew up in the projects. And then foster care. I learned to never be attached to anything because of foster care. When I was adopted, I was taught that joy was selfish- that every dollar had to prove its worth- that I should give away everything extra that I have. Buying something just because I liked it felt dangerous and selfish and not Christian. Journaling about it helped me see that I do deserve nice things. That I can take care of myself and still care for others.
